What does "++" mean on a Singapore menu? You pay 19.9% more

Updated 26 Oct 2026 · 1 min read

“++” means two charges are added to the menu price:

  1. a 10% service charge, then
  2. 9% GST on the price plus the service charge.

So the multiplier is 1.10 × 1.09 = 1.199. A $100 meal costs $119.90.

Quick table

Menu price You pay
$12 $14.39
$25 $29.98
$48 $57.55
$100 $119.90
$300 $359.70

Quick mental maths

Add 20% and take off a little. $48 + 20% is $57.60; the real bill is $57.55.

Is “++” allowed?

Yes, but GST-registered businesses must also show the GST-inclusive price, so look for the full price on the menu or ask before ordering. Hawker centres and most coffee shops don’t charge service charge, so their prices are usually what you pay.

Should I tip?

Tipping isn’t expected in Singapore, especially when a service charge is already added.
