What is SP-CCA? Water polo, canoeing and athletics when your school doesn't offer them

Updated 2 Nov 2026 · 2 min read

Want to do water polo, but your school has no pool?

Every secondary school student in Singapore takes a CCA (co-curricular activity: a sport, club, arts group or uniformed group after school). But what happens if you want to try canoeing, athletics, or water polo, and your posted school does not offer it?

You do not have to miss out. This is where SP-CCA (Strategic Partnership CCA) comes in.

What is SP-CCA?

SP-CCAs are centralised, non-school-based CCAs run by MOE (Ministry of Education) in collaboration with SportSG (Sport Singapore), for secondary school students.

Here are the key facts on how it works:

  • Centralised training: Sessions are conducted by professional instructors and coaches jointly assessed by MOE and MCCY (Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth).
  • Train together: Students from different schools train together.
  • Who can join: students whose own schools do not offer that CCA.
  • Beginners welcome: No prior experience is required.
  • Single CCA commitment: Students enrolled in an SP-CCA do not need a school-based CCA as well.

SP-CCA activities and school availability

In MOE’s school directory on data.gov.sg, secondary schools list SP-CCA options for their students. Here is how many schools list each activity:

SP-CCA activity Schools listing it
Athletics 60
Water Polo 53
Canoeing 29
Hockey 9
Ethnic Dance 6

Separately, 25 schools run water polo as their own CCA. You can view the list of schools with water polo as a CCA.

Checking options on Kiasu Kit

Each school page on Kiasu Kit lists its own CCAs and, separately, the SP-CCA options its students can join. You can compare options across campuses using the school finder.
