GEP ends in its current form from 2027: what replaces it

Published 2 Nov 2026 · Takes effect 1 Jan 2027

The Gifted Education Programme (GEP) as parents know it, with selected pupils moving to one of nine schools from Primary 4, is being replaced from 2027.

What changes

  • Last GEP intake: Primary 4 in 2026. That cohort carries on and finishes Primary 6 in 2028.
  • New identification in Primary 3. Pupils in Primary 3 in 2026 are the first to sit a single, standardised identification exercise in August 2026, replacing the two-stage GEP screening and selection tests. Schools can also use their own information, such as teacher observations.
  • No school transfer. Pupils no longer move to a GEP school.

What replaces it

School-based provisions in every primary school, such as in-curriculum extensions and after-school programmes. MOE expects about 10% of each cohort to benefit, up from about 7%.

Weekly advanced modules at designated centres for pupils who need more stretch:

  • English, Mathematics or Science modules: two hours a week after school during term
  • Interdisciplinary modules: during the school holidays
  • Held at a designated centre near the pupil’s own school

Pupils can also be identified at the end of each semester in Primary 4 and 5.

The 15 designated centres

Ahmad Ibrahim, Clementi, Geylang Methodist (Primary), Innova, Jurong West, Kheng Cheng, Palm View, Pioneer, Punggol View, Queenstown, St. Gabriel’s, Tampines, Teck Ghee, Yew Tee and Yu Neng primary schools (as reported when MOE announced the change).

What it means for choosing a primary school

The nine GEP schools no longer take in GEP pupils after 2026, and attending a designated centre does not depend on enrolling at it. Our school pages show both the GEP schools and the centres.
